Vinegaroon

One of the Coolest Arachnids

The Vinegaroon, so named because the defensive chemical it sprays from the duct on the end of the abdomen smells like vinegar, is one of the most intimidating looking arachnids in west Texas. Yet, this is one of the easiest to handle and pleasurable arachnid pets you can imagine. They are relatively slow moving, often seen crossing roads on wet, warm, humid evenings. On occasion, one may be found by looking under rocks.

While their pincers like weaponry designed by the devil, I have never been pinched once. Their carapace is very hard providing protection from would be predators. The front legs have evolved to serve as “feelers” for their surroundings.

Prey often include grasshoppers, desert millipedes, scorpions, and other insects/arachnids.

If you are looking enough to come across one, enjoy it’s presence without fear and just be thankful they don’t grow to be four foot in length!
